Modeling Energy and Non - energy Substitution A Survey of Elasticities # 256

چکیده
Estimating the degree of substitution between energy and non-energy inputs is key for any evaluation of environmental and energy policies. Yet, given the large variety of substitution elasticities, the central question arises as to which measure would be most appropriate. Apparently, ALLEN’s elasticities of substitution have been the most-used measures in applied production analysis. In line with Frondel (2004), this paper argues that cross-price elasticities are preferable for many practical purposes. This conclusion is based on a survey of classical substitution measures, such as those from ALLEN, MORISHIMA, and MCFADDEN. The survey also highlights the fact that cross-price elasticities are their essential ingredients. JEL Classifi cation: C3, D2

متن کاملEstimation and Analysis of Energy Price Elasticities of Iranian provinces: The Augmented Mean Group Estimator Approach
In the literature on energy economics, estimating and analyzing price elasticities of energy demand is one of the important issues in examining the effectiveness of pricing modalities for energy conservatin and environmental policy follow-up. In this regard, low price elasticities of energy demand will increase the need for non-price policies to change consumer behavior and stimulate energy sav...
متن کاملبررسی رابطه نهادههای تولید و حاملهای انرژی در صنعت ایران
In this study, by using manufacturing firms' cost functions and their demand for inputs, we attempt to find the relationship between production inputs and energy carriers during (2005-ا2013). A dynamic model is implemented to derive the short and long-run elasticities of demand and substitution. The results show that during the period 2005-ا2013, energy and capital were complement for labor, a...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF CUTTING ENERGY CONSUMPTION SUBSIDIES ON INDUSTRIAL AIR POLLUTION IN IRAN
Air pollution is an example of a negative externality; it imposes harmful effects and costs on people other than polluterS. In controlling air pollution, efficiency argument implies that, there is a rolefor the government to play. Studies show that taxation of fuels can be a powerful indirect instrumentfor controlling air polluticn because of the association between fuels use and emissions. In ...
متن کاملCartelized Oil Market with Alternative Energy Supply
This paper presents an oil price cartel model. The aggregate reaction functions for non-cartel producers and for substitute suppliers are included. The former group acts as a price-taker, while the latter expects oil prices in production of its non-oil energy resources. This expectation about prices affects a cartel’s oil demand and, thus, gives intertemporal price elasticities It turns out tha...
